Calming Through the Heart

Do you feel stuck with no escape, ungrounded and flighty? Are old addictions coming back to haunt you during the pandemic and the times of social distancing and isolation?

I offer another way to calm and soothe yourself in times of high anxiety.

Find a quiet and calm space and get comfortable. Take a few deep breaths to settle yourself. Now bring your awareness from your monkey mind with its whirring machinery of worry and fear, its endless capacity for self argument, the unkind inner critic, the constant mindless chatter, the never ending ego complaints to the peace of your heart.

Tune into the gentle beat, the quiet rhythm. You might be able to feel your pulse by gently placing a hand on your neck right below where the ear and jaw meet.

Now hold your heart with both palms on the center of your chest. Imagine that you can breathe through your heart. Feel the exhalation, the emptying. Imagine the breath flowing from your heart, releasing the stale worries, the old thoughts that bring you down, spent energy you are ready to let go of.

Now as your lungs fill, know that you are bringing in fresh new air, new energy, new possibilities to your heart, the seat and center of your life.

Tune into the steadiness the cadence of your heartbeat that’s been with you since before your birth. Even before your heart began to beat, you knew your mother’s heartbeat, and before her birth she knew her mother’s heartbeat, the underlying rhythm, the legacy of life.

Trust that right now as your heart beats you are alive. You are safe. You belong here.

Intention and dreams

Do your intentions flow directly from your heart and spirit, or are they products of your thinking logical brain that knows what’s best, what you should, what you should not?

The part of your brain trained up by your schools and parents and society knows the “rules”. It knows what is physically possible and impossible, (you learned it in a book) what you can and cannot, how to get ahead, which careers will bring you the most money, and who is misbehaving according to your code of conduct.

To be effective potent and powerful, your intentions must flow from your heart and spirit, the part of you where dreams are created. The part of you that existed before your cultural training set in and upset the balance of your creativity and grace and flow and restricted you self concept.

When you tap into this reservoir of creativity and power, you can imagine yourself moving beyond old limitations. Then you can set your intentions for your life based on expansion and possibilities you dream of.

Leave behind the old restrictive rules and boxes and limitations you’ve placed on your dreams!

When you can feel it, dream it, imagine it, define it, and intend it, you can become it.

The most important fact

Have you come to a point where you must choose one way or the other way? Do you have trouble making up your mind and holding firm to your choices? Is your attention is scattered unfocused, spread too thin?

You need the facts, my friend. And the most important fact is what your heart desires; how you feel!

Yes, you can gather and glean the sort of facts and figures that can be found in an encyclopedia, a reference manual, an expert opinion. You can do this til the cows come home and your brain is overstuffed and you can recite the reasons why and why not in your sleep.

Yet if the facts and figures and rational thought of your logical mind tell you one thing, and your heart tells you another, you must pay attention and give equal weight to your heart.

The energy and intuition of your heart is connected to all that is – the wisdom, the knowing, the love. It extends beyond the “logical zone”.

When you tune into your heart with compassion awareness and acceptance, you are no longer in the logical zone. You are in a new dimension entirely. Do not fear, for here you are supported and uplifted by the loving heart of the universe.

If your mind tells you you may not have what your heart desires, ask your higher self – How can I make this work? Please show me and guide me to the solutions my heart desires that also work for me on a practical level. Let go of fear and trust your heart!

What is success?

Have others defined success for you? Do you subscribe to the popular view that bigger and more is better?

How do you define success? Is it a big house and three car garage in the fashionable part of town? Is it a stressful high powered career in which you get to boss others? Is it lots of money in the bank?

Is your definition of success winning at your game of choice? Are their losers in your game?

Is your idea of success feeling happy in the life you’ve chosen? Is it thriving in the place you’ve chosen, doing what makes you heart sing, feeling comfortable in your body? Is it having time to relax and enjoy your family and friends; the simple but soul satisfying moments of a life well lived?

Decide what matters to you, what success is to you. Take the time to quiet your mind and get in touch with your inner spirit, beyond thought. Your heart will know the truth.

You are the master of your life, your time, your energy. You choose how to spend these most precious resources. Spend them wisely! Spend them in support of a life that satisfies your soul!

Book learning and heart wisdom

As you have gained in book learning, – “the 3 Rs” science, and technology, you have forgotten and minimized the ancient and powerful wisdom of your heart.

What good is your technical knowledge if you are seething with anger and rage? Who cares if you can recite a speech, a pledge, an epic poem if you have no empathy and compassion for your fellow earth inhabitants? Who cares that you have statistical “proof” that all is well when you feel unhappy, heartsick and physically ill?

Emotional wisdom is far more important to your survival as a species than book learning. Feel the emotion in your body, name it, put your awareness on it. Breathe and feel.

It won’t bite. I might make you feel uncomfortable. Can you live with uncomfortable? Do you want to numb the discomfort? Try to stay with it. If you can’t, find someone who can help you through this.

Be your own best friend! Accept the feelings as they come and go. If you reject an emotion you reject yourself. Love and accept yourselves and allow your feelings to be what they are. Learn from them.

True riches, the infinite fountain of abundance are only to be found by those who look inward with compassion and courage.

It takes your so called guts to live a beautiful life here on this planet where uncertainty reigns, where nothing is guaranteed, where life is exquisitely beautiful, where death is a given.
