Bare branches shiver in the roaring winter wind; air heavy with blowing snow, the sun dimmed, sky heavy with impenetrable clouds. All the world softened, hazy and indistinct.
Pitiless wind ripping and tearing across the land, scouring everything in its path. Wind forming snow into drifts of sculptural beauty near buildings, fences, trees, shrubs. Like smoke from a furious fire, snow pours from roof peaks and slopes.
All perennial rooted beings sleep under the cold blanket. Their life retreats inward to the roots, waiting for spring to rise again, oblivious to the wind and cold and the shifting drifts covering all the land.
All fur bearers are safe within their burrows or weather tight nests, snuggled together for warmth. Winter birds fluff their feathers under cover, cold blooded creatures hibernate in their earthy dens, sleeping deeply beneath the frozen mud.
Dear ones, remember the wonder you felt as a child your face pressed to the icy window, watching the snowstorm rage, joyful at the school cancellation?
You were safe and warm in your lighted house, watching the fury unfold outside, feeling the fierce beauty, the raw power of wind and snow.
Have you gone outside on a midwinter day to lie on the cool crusty snow, letting the Earth take your weight and support you, the snow molding to your shape?
Have you gone out to lie down and soak in the cool fresh air, to absorb the Earth Energy that powers you? To know your oneness with all of life?
Let the nearby trees weave a lacy net of branches for your protection. Know the solid fabric of their roots below the surface, creating a strong foundation for your physical life, holding and anchoring the soil that gives us life.
Let the clean cool air refresh and revitalize your energy, lift your spirits, the blue sky inspire your dreams, expand your mind, enlarge your knowledge of what is possible.
Dream and rest under the sky, letting the blanket of snow cushion and cradle you.
Let yourself be one with this Earth and accept her precious winter offerings.
Every season, every feeling, every kind of weather, every person in your world has their place in the great panorama of your life. If you feel irritated, unhappy, too cold, too hot, too wet, too dry, if you are blocked by snowstorms, that is simply your reality in the moment.
Do you push your current reality from your mind and curse the weather, wishing the sun would shine, the snow melt? Do you try to avoid the irritating person and pretend they aren’t part of your daily landscape?
Do you resist what is and hope for better things and nicer people? Do you believe the fiction that cold weather is bad, that winter is awful?
In this way, your monkey mind sets you up for unhappiness. Can you take a step back from the whirling thoughts and simply accept what is – the weather, the people, the conditions? …and that they are not going away any time soon?
Can you gradually learn to stop the resistance against what is? It takes a lot of your precious energy to push back against reality day after day, year after year.
When you slow & stop the resistance and live in the pure present moment without judgment, life flows more easily. More energy is available to you to do those things you enjoy.
Of course, I am not advocating staying with an abuser or putting up with misbehavior or dangerous conditions. Do what you can to free yourself if you are stuck in these patterns, and work to change the unhealthy conditions you have some control over.
As you get out of your head and into the present moments of your life, feel the change in you!
Hang on, winter weary humans, spring is coming! In the meantime, don’t wish your life away! Have faith like my roots that reach deep into the soil below the place where ice and cold and snow can touch them – deep into the warm dark earth, our home.
Have faith and trust that all is well! Behind the heavy cloud cover is the blue sky, beneath the snow, the grass waits, beneath the dead leaves and frozen soil, all manner of living things sleep, ready for the return of the sun.
Do not despise this time of year. Do not hate your circumstances. Do not live in the future imagined sunny day; for when you live in the fantasies of your mind, you negate the only thing that really matters, your most precious gift, the present moment!
You make yourself powerless when you live only in your head! It is your body and heart that live here and now. Find a way to fully inhabit your body, for then you will find true joy. Find something to take pleasure in each day, even if the snow lies until June!
You have been given a treasured gift- life here on earth. Use it wisely
