Healing the web of life

The web of life that has existed since before the Earth whirled into being has been weakened by human wars, torn by pollution, worn thin by widespread human anxiety, and broken in places by acts of violence.

We rooted and wild creatures are at the mercy of human behavior, the sometimes out of control egos, the mindless lashing out at others, the hurt flung out at random into the world, thinking that will make things better, but only adding to the garbage pile of ugliness that hurts all beings by damaging the precious web of life on which we all depend.

To renew our priceless web, we must work in harmony and peace with all beings, co-existing with our Earthly neighbors to heal ancestral wounds and resentments that keep us stuck, to face and reweave the patterns that cause resentment, war, greed, and violence.

Amazing spider web

I feel hopeful that we natives of planet Earth, humans, plants, one-celled beings, animals, insects, fish, arachnids, birds, all together can reweave the amazing web of life that sustains us here on our blue-green planet. Every living being including every human being who is able must step up and do our part.

Dear humans, I ask you to clean up your act now as we begin this necessary work of planetary healing. Bring in leaders at all levels who have a heart instead of a vast emptiness at their center that can never be filled.

Instead of leaders with inflated egos and mean spirits, choose those who set the example of compassion, human understanding, those who know that true power comes from within, from connection and common ground, not from a nuclear weapon. Let these compassionate and courageous new leaders inspire you!

Grandmother Cottonwood

The web still holds strong, even with the damaged and weakened places, for the power of love and connection and peace are stronger and more resilient than fear and pettiness and hate and war.

The web of life endures.

Winter’s rest

As the light slowly returns to the sky, as the northern hemisphere of our Earth turns once again toward the light, the energy of all living things slowly shifts into a time of pause and rest as the light grows little by little each day.

Deep midwinter, a time to rest and draw inward, a time to tune into your body and your breath, time to relax and let go of your striving pushing and must do, must have mentality.

Grandmother Cottonwood in winter

Your entire being is exquisitely tuned to the light, the seasons. Trust the wisdom and honor the needs of your body mind and spirit. Yes, you may be able to override your instincts and rhythms for awhile, but at what cost?

When your body requires rest, when your mind requires contemplation and when your heart needs to turn inward, you will have to let go of your expectations for “getting things done” that is so near and dear to the human heart.

Winter is a time to dream, a time to plan, a time to rest. When you empty your mind of whirling thoughts and big ideas and the need to push forward for a time, you make room for fresh new creative energy to enter your life.

Frozen creek

Getting things done, enjoying increased energy, getting started on your pet projects will come in time, my dears. Have patience during the darker colder months. As the light grows, you will gain energy and stamina and your sense of purpose will return.

For now, allow yourself to close your eyes, cover yourself in comfort, breathe, sleep and dream. You rest knowing this time your body needs for renewal will not last forever.

Trust the rhythm of your days, the seasons of your life, the wisdom of your body. Trust the needs and longings of your spirit.

When you love and nurture yourself in this way, you truly know what it is to love yourself unconditionally.

Three worlds

I, Grandmother Cottonwood, am a magnificent tree. I live in three worlds.

My roots reach deeply into the lower world, pulled by gravity , the magnetic pull of Earth’s core. My roots draw in nourishment and water and all earth elements needed to feed me.

This is the zone of magic, of power, of earthy energies and animal spirits, of ancient knowledge, of survival on this planet. This is the region of Earth wisdom that will feed your souls.

The wisdom of the lower world has been accumulated over millennia from the time our Earth was a swirling mass of gasses, even before life took hold.

All myths, legends, all ancient wisdom resides here. You can tap into their power and richness. They will feed and fuel your growth. As my roots feed me.

I am rooted to the Earth

GCW root zone

My magnificent trunk and large limbs reside in the middle world, the spiritual aspect of the created world. Here I weather storms, bake under a hot summer sun, rest in winter, scatter my seeds in spring. Here I age and witness tired old limbs fall to the earth and others thrive and come into leaf.

I witness my bark growing thicker and tougher each year. I interweave branches and roots with the sycamores, the hack-berries, the thorny locusts, the grasses, the nearby cottonwoods.

Here I interact with the energy, the spirits of those who walk by or who lean against me, those who give me tree hugs.

Our spirits are all one here. All living beings are connected through our invisible energies. Our spirits interweave and overlap whether we know it or not. We communicate and understand each other. Human, plant, animal, insect, Earth.

As a living being on planet Earth, my awareness is centered in my physical reality in this place and time

I am centered in my body.

Grandmother Cottonwood

My smaller branches and tiny twigs, my growing tips and buds, my fine crown of leaves reside in the upper world. This is a place of expansion, of light, of growth, a place of miracles of divine wisdom and divine energies. This is the realm of spirit, of your higher self.

Here the sunlight touches my leaves fueling their growth as they absorb the life giving light. My crown brings the amazing energies of the divine down from the heavens into my body to keep life alive. I reach to the sun, my source of power. I am whole and complete

I am aligned with divine light.

Single feather in winter

Release with blessings and gratitude those people, places, actions, beliefs and situations that no longer work for you, that now feel out of harmony, off balance; those that drain you; obligations that numb your mind; those places and traditions that shatter your peace; Entertainment that hurts your heart; People you you must defend your sensitivity against; Beliefs that harm you and others.

Welcome the new with confidence and grace

Be patient as you shift into new beliefs that lift you up, healthier thought patterns, new pathways and plans for a well lived life, creative new ideas and goals.

Journey to your spirit

No matter what happens in your life, no matter how you feel, no matter how fearful angry frustrated or hurt you feel, your infinite spirit is always with you.

It is at your center, knowing your wholeness, tending and holding the eternal flame of your being. Your spirit lights the way in the darkness for you to reclaim and rediscover your true self. It is whole and complete and calm underneath the dark storm clouds of emotion and fear.

Heavy storm clouds in winter

When you are hurting, tap into the spirit at your center, your wise self, and ask for guidance and comfort. When you are in pain, ask the light deep within you for relief and healing and insight.

When you are angry, ask your spirit, your higher self to show you how to release the anger in healthy ways. Ask to let it fuel your growth and creativity and show you how to create boundaries that keep you safe and protected.

If you cannot tap into your spirit or have never known the light and wisdom at your center, ask for help from a loving friend, kind therapist or wise healer to mirror back to your your light and your amazing bright star of wisdom, wholeness, and purpose deep at your core.

The Evergreens Speak

We are delighted and proud to bless this Earth with our heavenly fragrances, our beautiful crowns of green all year long, our deep roots that hold and weave the soil into a strong fabric, our spreading branches that shelter and provide homes and food for many living creatures, feathered, winged, fur bearing, six and eight legged.

Cedar in the snow

We take seriously our charge to lovingly shelter your homes, playgrounds, parks, schools and farmsteads, to provide beauty and stability, to act as silent companions to the dead in graveyards, to decorate your homes and places of worship in the dark and cold times of year when all other growing things are brown and sleeping

We are honored to enter into your homes and buildings to provide the structural support of the walls, floors, roofs, the natural beauty of our wood-grain in your trims and furniture. We lovingly share our beauty and our strength with you.

We evergreens spread our cloaks of green standing tall and proud, loving all beings, loving this life, this Earth, sharing sunlight and air with all living creatures, knowing the stones the soil and bedrock, rooted deeply and reaching to the light…

Evergreens in snow

We spread our fragrant green limbs in blessing.

Solstice

Low angled amber sunlight, long shadows, black skeletons of trees now visible as last summer’s dead leaves whirl away on the wind. Flocks of geese flying in formation.

Grandmother Cottonwood

Shafts of sunlight reach further and further into the house, striking a chord of memory from past winters…

Seeking out and momentarily lighting up hidden corners and far reaches. Illuminating interior hallways…

Inviting for a moment that which is hidden and dark to receive the light, to shine and glow in the clear and rare blessing of the winter solstice:

The slanting amber sunlight that turns all it touches to gold.

Holiday Traditions

Have you bitten off more than you can chew? Over committed to others, under committed to yourself? Are you running on empty?

Must you uphold tired old traditions that suck you dry, exhaust and deplete you?

Have you fallen into the “we’ve always done it this way” trap, or the “so and so expects it” trap? The guilt trap?

Do your expectations for your holiday celebrations match the reality of your needs, energy, desires and wishes?

Male cardinal in winter

Be honest with yourself and kind to yourself as you create fresh new holiday plans and loving new traditions that honor your deepest needs as an autonomous human being and a unique individual.

Do it your way!

This life you are living is yours to shape. You are the potter, life is your clay.

You can free yourself from stale and unhealthy patterns that have been built up over years of others living on autopilot.

Keep what you love, discard the rest.

Within whatever confines you find yourself this holiday season, be creative, be true to yourself.

You can celebrate the holidays in ways that honor and respect your deepest self.

Your Creative Space

Are you a creator?

Perhaps you have a beautiful sunny room stocked with the materials and equipment of your creative passion, maybe an art studio with an easel, palette, paints, brushes, canvases, a printing press, inks, good paper, sketch pads, pencils pens and stacks of your visual doodlings, project ideas and plans, trays and drawers of works in progress, framed works lining the walls…

You might have a garden shed stacked with many sizes and shapes of pots and special soil amendments waiting for spring, garden plans you’ve drawn out, drying herbs, catalogs with glossy photos of the plants you want to grow, a place for seeds, gardening books, small and large tools to help you plant, cultivate, harvest, and create your piece of heaven on Earth.

Red crab apples in fall

Or, perhaps your creativity is less visible to the naked eye. Remember this, even if you feel you have no creative bone in your body, as a human being you are a creator by definition.

You create your life from the inside out, just as a spider spins her web from the depths of her body to create her masterwork, your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs emanate from you with an energetic reality, creating the conditions, climate and expectations, the focus and foundation for your experience.

Magnificent spider web

Even if you are not an artist, a gardener, a musician, a woodworker a designer with a fancy studio, you have your own creative space in your mind and heart that is yours and yours alone.

Use the tools you’ve been given – thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs, the ability to focus, to set intentions, and your ability to visualize and plan for the future to create and shape the life you desire.

You first imagine the life you intend within the creative space of your inner being. Line up your thinking, feeling, beliefs, your speech, your expressions, your actions with the life you intend to create.

With patience mindfulness and persistence you can create a beautiful life for yourself. Masterworks take time, my dears.

Take the Time You Need

Dear ones, It is vital to take the time you need to heal, to grieve, to grow, to be. Allow yourself to take the time you need

Even if it is to pause in an overcrowded day so you can take a deep breath, to feel your chest, ribs, and belly expand with life giving oxygen. Pause a moment to fill yourself, then slowly release with full attention.

Surely you have the time to do this, to give this moment of calm to yourself.

Grandmother Cottonwood

You might pause a moment to notice the feelings and sensations in your body- where they are located, their quality, intensity, the fleeting nature, how they shift and change with your breath.

Pause for a brief time in your crazy busy day and pay attention to this moment. Feel the weight of your hands in your lap, the balance of your head on your neck and shoulders, your feet contacting the floor or earth, your body’s contact with the chair.

You are paying attention to being in a body and loving yourself in these small and simple ways. Let yourself feel and be without judgment, without worry or hurry.

Have you bound yourself with too many shoulds and oughts and must do’s, striving for an impossible perfection? I ask you to come back to your body, your breath, the stillness at your center beneath all the surface flotsam, the noise and the rushing from point A to point B.

When you learn to quiet your crazy busy life for several moments each day, you will learn to know and love your true and deep self once again as you knew yourself as a child.
